So I’m headed back home tomorrow (actually, today, as you are living in the future and I am talking to you from the past. Aha!) for more probate fun. If you’ve never had the pleasure of acting as executor (well, executrix in my case, as that’s the feminine form, and there is a difference in many languages, particularly the reasonable ones, which of course excepts English- but I digress!) of an estate, you…well, you aren’t missing anything. It is boring and tedious and depressing and a right pain in the ass. And this is with a very small estate with a detailed will, thank goodness. Otherwise, this would be a nightmare, and not just a chore.
Anyway, since I’ll be making many, many such trips back home until the estate is settled, I’ve decided I need to make my trips less sad and more interesting. I feel like I know all there is to know about the bit of Northeastern NC that I called home for so long, but I’m sure that I’ve missed a lot. You know how it is when you live in an area for a long while- you settle into patterns, you find it harder and harder to deviate from your ‘usual,’ and you end up doing the same things over and over again without variation. While there’s a certain amount of comfort and nostalgia in tracing the same patterns over and over, there are certain times when nostalgia equals raw sadness. Right now is one of those times for me. I figure I can make these trips more bearable and maybe even fun by trying new things.
Tomorrow I’m taking a different route back home, and I’m planning a brief side trip to an area I’ve always been interested in exploring. I’ll be taking my camera, since taking pictures always cheers me up. If I see anything interesting, I’ll be sure to show y’all!
Taking pictures is one of my favorite things to do, but there are a precious few things that might edge it out on the Favorite Things list. One of those things is Eating. Mmm, food…Glorious Food! I’ve decided that another good focus for me on these trips might be discovering new and interesting places to eat. I’ve put the call out on Twitter for any recommendations for tomorrow’s trip, but it’s rather late at this point. If I don’t get any interesting suggestions, I think I’ll just go rogue and pick a good-looking spot and try it out. What’s the worst that can happen? Food poisoning?
If you’ve got any ideas for ways to make my trips more bearable, let me know. I’ve toyed with the idea of making specific driving playlists, since music is a beautiful diversion. I’ve also got some podcasts queued up and ready. If you have music/playlist/podcast/audiobook suggestions, send them my way! Any other suggestions (restaurant/side trip/general life advice are also welcome. I don’t guarantee I’ll take your life advice, though, just to warn you. I’m a bit hardheaded, I’ve heard.
For reference, my usual route from home is 40E-64E-11N. Sometimes I go 40E-64E-95N-481N to Enfield then a bunch of country roads. Tomorrow I’m going 85N-158E to Roanoke Rapids then a bunch of country roads. I’ll be very pleasantly surprised if any one has surprises for me in this part of the state!
